Grandchildren are great bringers of joy. But sometimes, being a grandparent seems to be anything but joyful.

True, you can enjoy them and hand them back. Though this might also mean spending the next week clearing up the mess left behind.

But there’s more to making a go of grandparenting than trying to do what your parents did and muddling through. That’s because –

• Grandparenting is not how it was in your parents’ day. There have been great changes in the way families and society operate.
• The need to get it right calls for some good advice and a commitment to follow it.
